Animation | Effects Animation | Ink | Color | Backgrounds

  • Animators: Because of the volunteer nature of the project, we will continue to need additional animators through the completion of the film. People willing to work on human characters are particularly needed. We do ask that animators be willing to be active on the staff message boards and to take critique. Animation is hand drawn, digitally compiled.

    Skills you need:
    The ability to animate
The ability to follow a character design
A solid understanding of human and canine anatomy

    Equipment you need:
Scanner or other digital input device

    How to apply:
Send an animation sample to the application address. The sample should be character animation (more than a run cycle/blink). Demo reels also accepted.

What is character animation? Character animation involves the illusion of thought and emotion in an animated object (note that character animation does NOT have to be of a human or animal -- it's possible to do effective character animation of objects as well). The most effective character animation can tell you what a character is "thinking" without dialogue or captioning. Walk cycles, blinks, and other purely action-based animation is not character animation.

  • Effects Animators: Effects animators have the unenviable job of animating such intricate items as water, snowflakes, wind-blown leaves, lightning, and the sparkles and flame for Luna.

Animators applying for this job should be prepared to give a lot of their time to the project. They will be required to provide both rough and finalized (inked, colored) animation where necessary. We realize that color, gradient, and line control are integral parts of effects animation and that offloading those steps to our inkers may not always be an option.

    Skills you need:
    The ability to animate
Incredible patience and a touch of OCD behavior

    Equipment you need:
Scanner or other digital input device
A program that can export to PSD (Photoshop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro all accepted.)

    How to apply:
Send at least two effects animation samples to the application address. The samples should be from the following categories:

    • Running water (river, creek, small rapids -- the water-droplet exercise does not count!)
    • Fire
    • Rain (must be hitting the ground, not just going past the camera).
    • Falling snow/snow being moved by someone's feet
  • Inkers: Inkers take the raw pencil work from our animators and reline them digitally to prep for coloring. It is their work that finally makes it to the screen.

    Skills you need:
The ability to draw smooth digital lines
The ability to follow a character design to perfection
    Attention to detail
A solid understanding of human and canine anatomy

    Equipment you need
A program that can export to PSD (Photoshop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro all accepted.)

    How to apply:

Inkers may include artwork of their own, but must also ink the following lineart:
    Janus

The reason for this change in the submission process is that we've discovered that being able to ink a still image does not necessarily translate to inking animation! When you're inking the shot, pay special attention to line quality, flow of line, avoidance of jitter, and truth to the animator's line. When you are finished, please flatten the images and submit them as JPG or PNG format to the submissions email address. Please do not send PSDs. This isn't our usual process for the actual film, but to save space and prevent the possibility of the email being kicked back to you it's quite necessary.

  • Colorists: Colorists do just what it sounds like they'd do.

Please Note: We are only accepting a VERY limited number of colorists and are very picky about colorist apps. Follow the instructions below to the letter if you want to make the cut.

    Skills you need:
The ability to follow a character design to perfection
    Attention to detail
A solid understanding of human and canine anatomy

    Equipment you need
A program that can export to PSD (Photoshop, Gimp, Paint Shop Pro all accepted.)

    How to apply:

Colorists may color line art of their own, art that is freely available elsewhere, or the lineart below:
    Star

Colorists must also have been an upstanding member of the forums for at least three months before applying. Because coloring is something that the majority of folks can do, the acceptance of a colorist app will hinge more on an individual's personality, apparent trustworthiness, and evident devotion to the project. A clean coloring example is also of course important, but we're far more willing to work to overcome minor imperfections with someone who has made him or herself known to us and proven his or her worth outside the project than we are to accept the risks that come with taking on a complete unknown. So be sure to get to know us first before applying to color.

  • Background Artists/Layouts: You should be able to paint or draw realistic scenery. Background artists must be able to paint to a style, for consistency. We are in need of people with experience in drawing structures.

    Skills you need:
The ability to digitally paint realistic backgrounds
The ability to match your painting style to ours

    Equipment you need
We provide you with an ArtRage license

    How to apply:
Send examples of your artwork to the application address. Background applicants should send completed colored pieces, preferably of rural settings. Layout artists may send pencil renderings, or digital sketches in black and white.
